Judge Cebull:
As the Chief Judge on the Federal District Court for Montana, you are expected to show sound judgment and a temperament that reflects fairness and impartiality. Your action in forwarding a tasteless, offensive “joke” about the president’s deceased mother shows none of those. Instead, it has called into question your judgment and has made public possible biases that should preclude you from participating in a number of types of cases.
In your seemingly sincere apology to President Obama, you said in addition to the apology and submitting yourself to the Ninth Circuit for review, you don't know what else you can do. The answer to that is clear -- for the sake of the people of Montana and the judicial branch, you can and should resign.
Signed,
