Help Teach Sarah Palin the First Amendment

Palin

Sarah Palin has been displaying a dreadful misunderstanding of Freedom of Speech and the First Amendment. Worse, she's using her platform on the national political stage to spread this distorted view of our Constitution.

Help us send her 1 million copies of the First Amendment to help her learn it and to protect other Americans from her distortions.

Glenn Beck's Political, Hypocritical, Me-Party, Tea Party Weekend

What are we to make of Glenn Beck's repeated assertions that his "Restoring Honor" weekend had "nothing to do with politics and everything to do with God?" They are simply additional evidence that Beck is a shrewd marketer with an increasingly messianic view of his political role. The Right-wing Obama-and-Pelosi-hating base is already energized; Beck's soft-focus rally was a public relations effort to expand his reach to the middle. Join us, he's saying, we're the ones who love our country and what it stands for.

Beck's weekend events, and the Tea Party festivities that surrounded them, were really designed to advance the primary political project of far-right leaders in America: marrying anti-tax, anti-government economics with socially conservative religion, and wrapping the whole destructive package in a feel-good Christian-nation Americanism -- and all of that in the service of putting Republicans back in power in 2010 and 2012.

In addition to Glenn Beck's supposedly-nonpolitical political event with Sarah Palin on Saturday -- the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech," and on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, right where King delivered that historic speech -- there were several more side-events this weekend in D.C.:

- Glenn Beck hosted "Divine Destiny" at the Kennedy Center on Friday night, which was a reception that was ALL about mixing religion and politics but included Glenn Beck incredibly saying the words, "religion and politics must not mix." (Basic messages: America's a Christian nation, we are at war with Islam and we have "evidence," from folks like David Barton, to back up our [revisionist] history.)

- FreedomWorks, Dick Armey's notorious "astroturfing" company responsible for funding and organizing the early Tea Party and the infamous town hall meeting protests of last year, held a "Take America Back" convention also on Friday night. FreedomWorks along with the Tea Party were enlisted to help Beck organize and pull of Saturday's rally.

- On Sunday, Tea Party protesters turned out near the U.S. Capitol to brandish the slogans and signs that were discouraged by Beck for Saturday.

Check out our blog coverage of the weekend's events as well as pictures:

Dozens of Congressional Candidates Pledge to Support a Constitutional Amendment Overturning Citizens United

Dozens of candidates for Congress have pledged to support a constitutional amendment to overturn a controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling and thereby help ensure that elections are not hijacked by corporations. The candidates responded to a call from People For the American Way and Public Citizen, which last month launched the pledge drive at www.PledgeForDemocracy.org.

GOP Obstruction Against Judges Reaches New Low

Before leaving for August recess, the Senate GOP refused to confirm numerous judicial nominees who have been waiting months for up-or-down votes, including several who were approved unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate confirmed four judges, and agreed to move forward on one more, but refused to act on seventeen more nominees, nine of whom were approved by voice vote or unanimous roll-call vote.

"The level of obstruction being displayed by the GOP is jaw dropping," said Marge Baker, Executive Vice President at People For the American Way. "It's clear that Republican Senators are intent on grinding judicial nominations to a halt."

Radio Ad Highlights Grassley's Criticism of Civil Rights Leader

People For the American Way this month released a radio ad calling out Sen. Charles Grassley for his criticism of civil rights hero Thurgood Marshall during Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan's recent confirmation hearings. The ad will air in Iowa starting tomorrow.

In an op-ed in the Des Moines Register, Julian Bond, a People For board member and former chairman of the NAACP, criticized Grassley and his fellow Republicans for their comments on Marshall. "These attacks didn't surprise me," Bond wrote, "because they're completely consistent with a party locked in the past, echoing the anti-civil rights message of those who opposed Justice Marshall's own confirmation in 1967."

NV-Senate: Sharron Angle, like Michele Bachmann, believes there are "domestic enemies" in Congress (among other things)

Sharron Angle, Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Nevada, has said that if Republicans can't take back Congress, they may resort to "Second Amendment remedies." She has expressed support for eliminating the Department of Education, and like several other Tea Party candidates, has indicated support for phasing out Social Security and Medicare. She's also echoed founder of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, Michele Bachmann (R-MN) that there are domestic enemies in the U.S. Congress... and she's sticking to her story...

Exposing the Tea Party's Benefactors

Frank Rich, Jane Mayer and others have done a great job exposing the Koch brothers, Rupert Murdoch, Paul Singer and the other billionaire bankrollers of the Radical Right's so-called "populist" uprising, Rich drawing some very important historical parallels between the corporate tycoons and extremist libertarians who are funding relentless attacks against this president's reforms and there predecessors in the New Deal and Great Society eras.

Right Wing Watch: Engle: Using The Call To Break Satan's Control Over Our Government

Mike Huckabee joined Tony Perkins, Mat Staver, Pat Roberston and others in recording a message urging activists to attend the upcoming "The Call" prayer rally with Lou Engle in Sacramento, CA.

And one of the points I have been trying to emphasize in my posts about the rise of these self-proclaimed "apostles" and "prophets" like Engle within the Religious Right movement is that when they claim to be battling Satanic and demonic forces, they mean that quite literally.

Right Wing Watch: Glenn Beck's Religious Activism Comes Full Circle

Some Religious Right activists have been growing alarmed by Glenn Beck's subtle transformation from Tea Party leader to religious leader because Beck is a Mormon, citing a recent radio program by Brannon Howse, president and founder of Worldview Weekend, which focused on how Beck has started merging Mormon doctrine with his lessons on American history.

As Julie Ingersoll explained, Howse brought Ed Decker, a former Mormon, on to his program last week to explain the significance behind the theories Beck was promoting on his August 18 show about the history of Native Americans...

When Will it Stop Being Cool to Be an Anti-Gay Republican?

Ken Mehlman, the man who orchestrated George W. Bush's 2004 reelection campaign--including, we can presume, its electorally popular anti-gay positions--came out as gay himself. Mehlman says he's now working with American Foundation for Equal Rights to advocate for marriage equality.

The National Organization for Marriage immediately attacked Mehlman for "abdicating core Republican values."

Wall Street Falls in Love with the GOP All Over Again

A new Center for Responsive Politics study shows that Wall Street executives are now making 70% of their political contributions to Republicans. (And this is the money we can track: Wall Street firms can now use unlimited amounts of their corporate treasuries on political activities without disclosing what they're doing). According to the report, the spike in Wall Street's financial appreciation of the GOP coincided -- coincidentally, I'm sure -- with the Congressional debate over the financial reform law that was passed earlier this summer.

Those who have been busy pointing out the hypocrisy of those right-wing activists who hail the fundamental importance of defending the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom while simultaneously leading a crusade against the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" have been fond of asking just how large the "mosque exclusion zone" is supposed to be.

Well, Gary Bauer has an answer -- 3000 yards...

Fox Doubles Down on GOP Bias

Although there has always been an extremely thin line between news journalism and Republican Party activism at the Fox News Channel, network's parent company -- Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. just became not just a propaganda arm of the GOP, but also the party's financier. According to a Bloomberg report, the Republican Governors Association received a $1 million donation from News Corporation, the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and the Fox News Channel, and conservative newspapers such as the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal.
